PNM Annual Solar Car Race
I am a strategic account engineer here at PNM and I have been participating with the PNM Solar Car Races since I’ve been with PNM– about ten years. Employee volunteers go to local Pueblos and work with elementary students to design, build and race solar cars. The PNM Solar Car Races is one of my favorite ways to give back to my community because it’s a great opportunity to work with and encourage the youth of New Mexico.
Volunteering at this event, not only gives me a sense of gratitude, but I love the enthusiasm these kids bring to the project. The kids have a great time, they learn the importance of math and science and they have the opportunity to come together with other students from across the state and share their experiences. The time we share with the kids is a chance to plant the seeds to pursue degrees in STEM; Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.
I volunteer at Cochiti Pueblo, where we teach students about safety, team work, the science behind solar power, car design, and the mechanics of solar cars. We also show the kids how to calculate the solar angle and allow them to watch us solder and hot glue the components of the cars. We talk about the PNM power system and how power is delivered to their communities.
The event is wrapped up on the big race day which is held at the Explora science museum in Albuquerque. The schools bus their students in for a fun filled day at Explora. We close the day by racing the top cars from each participating school against each other. This is when the energy kicks in, the kids and PNM volunteers, cheer for their schools to take home the first place trophy! This is truly a great event….GO COCHITTI.
