Nuclear power is an important resource as the country reduces its dependence on burning fossil fuels. It produces zero carbon emissions and is extremely reliable.

Electricity generated from nuclear energy is an important part of PNM’s energy supply. It is an excellent source of base load power, meaning it is available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

PNM owns a percentage of the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station in Tonopah, Arizona, just outside Phoenix. This high-tech plant was built and is maintained to comply with stringent federal safety requirements, including automated and redundant safety systems and extensive security measures.

Stat: Roughly 13 percent of electricity in the world comes from nuclear power plants.

What Does It Cost?

Nuclear power generation is very reliable and available 90 percent of the time. It costs PNM approximately 5 cents per kilowatt-hour to produce.
